Throwback Thursday: Summer Mixtape

Grab your gel pens, pop open a blank slimline CD case, and get ready to write on a fresh silver disc with a Sharpie: "Summer Mix '96" (or whatever year held your favorite core memories).

Before algorithmic streaming playlists took over, creating the ultimate late-summer soundtrack was a tactile art form. You had to carefully curate the order, balance the high-energy pop anthems with the moody alternative jams, and pray that your CD burner didn't turn into a coaster at 98%.To capture every mood of the season, I’ve broken the tracks into four distinct mini-mixtapes: two dedicated to the definitive 90s, and two celebrating the iconic 00s.

Part 1: 90s Eurodance & High-Energy Floorfillers

This section is pure, unadulterated workout and party adrenaline. From early 90s club staples to late 90s Eurodance, these tracks feel like they belong on a crowded club dance floor. Though, considering I was only a handful of years old during the 90s, my 'dance floor' was usually just our living room carpet or wherever my older sister carried her boombox!

Core Memory Moments:

The Ace of Base CD: My mom had this album on heavy rotation, and we jammed to it start-to-finish. Wheel of Fortune, The Sign, Don't Turn Around, Happy Nation... all of it!

The Macarena: Even 20+ years later, I can still baila the Macarena on command.

Power Rangers Energy: My dad bought us the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie soundtrack (arguably one of the best 90s albums), and The Power by Snap! was the exact anthem my brother and I played to show off our mighty morphin' skills.

Part 2: 90s Sunny Radio Pop & Afternoon Chill

These are the quintessential radio hits that defined summer break in the 90s. Car rides hit differently back then; stuck in the backseat, I had all the time in the world to belt out every track with total pop star confidence.

Core Memory Moments:

The Station Switch: Out of pure respect for my sister, I left Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason" off this list 😉 She hated it so much she'd make our parents change the station instantly!

'90s Radio Staples: Anything Alanis Morissette defined peak '90s radio, and we fully surrendered to the Hanson craze (though my sister took her fandom to an elite level).

Bus Ride Nostalgia: Shoutout to Steve (may he rest in peace), my bus driver from kindergarten until I got my driver's license! Country music like Shania Twain will forever take me back to those early morning rides to school. I did a lot of daydreaming on those rides!

 

Part 3: 2000s Floor-Shakers

The 2000s ushered in a golden era of heavy basslines, iconic dance routines, and unstoppable collaborations. These tracks are guaranteed to get everyone moving. They take me right back to summer sleepovers spent trying to master every single step of the music video choreography!

Core Memory Moments:

Lake Day Mix CDs: Custom mix CDs were the ultimate currency of the era! My sister let me tag along to the lake with her friends, and we played SexyBack by Justin Timberlake non-stop on the drive there.

The Loose Era: Nelly Furtado's Loose album was (and still remains) one of the greatest summer records ever. I had Promiscuous and the rest of the album on constant loop for everything; working out, tanning, driving to my summer job, and hanging out in my room. It still takes me back to that summer every time I press play.

Radio Takeover: My peak 2000s summer memory is when the local radio station started playing Shakira's Hips Don't Lie literally every single hour. The moment it released, it became the undisputed anthem of the season! That was also the summer I graduated high school and as a graduation present my Dad bought us tickets to see her on her Oral Fixation Tour later that fall! Best year ever!

Part 4: 2000s Alt-Rock, Indie & Golden Hour Beats

As the sun sets on summer nights, this section brings in gritty guitar riffs, infectious synth-pop, and indie anthems that defined the 2000s. The lyrics start hitting a bit deeper here, with each song serving as its own mini time machine the second those first few bars play.

Core Memory Moments:

The Freshman Summer: Nelly Furtado’s "Turn Off the Light" dropped the summer before I started high school, anchoring a milestone year of joining color guard, falling in love, and experiencing profound loss all in a matter of months. It was my absolute favorite song back then, and I still listen to it with so much warmth today.

Earbuds & Bus Rides: Devin introduced me to Shakira's earlier Spanish albums, and in the summer of 2002, we shared a pair of earbuds and a CD player blasting the MTV Unplugged version of "Ojos Así" on a bus ride to a band competition.

A Heavy & Healing Melody: "My Savior" by Flesh Field still carries a deeply visceral sting after all these years. Devin dedicated it to me a few months before he passed away, and while it takes real courage to play it nowadays, I will always miss him.
