Closing Summer Shift: Back to Reality

Closing Summer Shift KW38 Blogust 2026

It is always a bittersweet time of year once the back-to-school supplies start hitting the store shelves. After what my kids have dramatically declared was the "worst summer break ever," I have never seen them so excited to get back into the classroom.

And truth be told? I am just as excited to get back into my own classroom, too! It’s only been a couple of months, but it feels like ages.

We still have a week of summer camps and slack schedules to enjoy, but there is plenty to prepare in order to make sure everyone's transition back to school and work goes smoothly. And that prep starts now!

Family Rhythms
While summer break is a welcome breather from our rigid routine, I always make a point to start easing the kids back into a normal sleeping and waking schedule early. Bedtime is moved up just a bit each night, and I encourage everyone to wake up a little earlier to avoid that brutal first-week alarm clock shock.

For me, August is also the official month for household admin! I’m scheduling annual appointments and getting our home rhythms aligned before the busy workweek takes over. I’m so thankful to have a three-week window after the kids start school to use those regular school hours to tackle my to-do list, including my own classroom prep!

Classroom Environment
I honestly can’t believe I am moving into my second year of teaching. I love my job so much, mostly because of the amazing ladies I am blessed to work with every single day. It really doesn't feel like work, which makes me love it even more!

When school ended, I left my room completely stripped down to a clean slate. Now comes the fun part: planning out how I want to organize and decorate for my incoming preschoolers, and putting in the sweat equity to get the room completely ready for Open House.

Mental & Calendar Prep
Since so much of my role involves planning and scheduling, my big goal before things get hectic is to sit down with my master calendar. I’m filling in all of our day-to-day duties, special programs, field trips, and everything in between. Nothing is going to catch me off guard this year if I can help it!

Whether you’re prepping a classroom of your own, sending kids off to a new grade, or just trying to get your home rhythms back in order for fall... we've got this!

I’d love to know in the comments: What is ONE thing you’re doing this week to prepare for the seasonal shift ahead?
