As the sun begins its gentle descent, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and gold, there's a unique magic that settles over summer evenings. This "golden hour" isn't just a beautiful spectacle; it's an invitation to slow down, reconnect with ourselves, and truly savor the season.
For moms, the whirlwind continues with dinner, baths, and bedtime routines (which can be more flexible, but still important). But there is also incredible potential for cherished family moments and some much-needed personal respite. For my "Savoring Summer" series, I'm all about embracing this special time. Today, let's explore how to integrate mindful self-care for ourselves and our families, and finding the sweet spot between juggling family time and alone time.
Sunset Stroll
There's nothing quite like a leisurely stroll as the day winds down. Summer evenings are perfect for movement that nourishes your body, rather than exhausts it.
With the fam: Make it an adventure! Point out colors in the sky, listen to nature, or search for fireflies. The kids can burn off excess energy and you can connect together as a family.
On your own: A walk around the neighborhood can be the remedy to restore your soul and gives you quiet moments to reflect and catch your breath from your busy day.
Simple Pleasures
Romanticizing your summer evenings is all about appreciating the simple pleasures and creating moments that feel intentional and special. This is vital family bonding time that your kids will remember and go on to share with their own families in the future. The best time to embrace this opportunity is when you gather at the table.
With the fam: Leave the screens behind or take your meal outdoors. Make the time you spend at the table the main event! Enjoy talking with your children and listen intently to what they have to say.
On your own: Once the kids are tucked in, fix yourself a simple snack or dessert and savor every bite. Enjoy it by candlelight, reading a chapter, or while you watch your favorite series or movie.
Made to Move
God created our bodies for movement. Music is known to bring people together, and what better way to release the stress of the day (and burn off the extra energy) than through dance!
With the fam: Put on some upbeat tunes and dance it out before bedtime. Some of my favorite memories growing up are living room dance parties. It's a surefire hit for every generation!
On your own: After the chaos dies down for the evening, create a playlist (or several) of tunes just for you. Create something calming, uplifting or nostalgic and let yourself get lost in the music.

Dream Weaving
Once the sun has set, settle in for the night with some quiet reflection and let your mind wander past the to-do lists and into dreamland.
With the fam: Write, read, or color as a family. Encourage your kids to dream big and shoot for the stars!
On your own: Once the kids are asleep, find a cozy spot and reflect on your day. Jot down your thoughts and let the quiet evening foster your sense of introspection as you prepare to rest up for a new day.
Go for the Glow
Some other ways to nurture your inner radiance as you end your day include: a long, luxurious soak with essential oils, indulging in a dreamy evening skincare routine, listen to a soothing audiobook or podcast, and taking time to prep for tomorrow as a gift for "future you."
Summer evenings offer precious opportunities to slow down, connect with your family, and find beauty in your everyday normal routine. Joy and whimsy can be found in the moments you share with your children as well as cherished in quiet solitude, because you deserve to experience the glow of the golden hour, too!
